Celebrating Black History Month 2026

This October is Black History Month, an opportunity to celebrate the achievements, contributions, and rich heritage of Black communities, while recognising the people and stories that have helped shape our society.

Here in Sheffield, Black history is also community history.  African and Caribbean communities have been part of the city for generations, with many people arriving during the 1950s and 1960s and making lasting contributions to Sheffield’s workplaces, neighbourhoods, culture, and community life.

Volunteering and community action continue to play an important part in that story. Across Sheffield, community organisations and volunteers help bring people together, celebrate heritage, support young people, and strengthen local communities. For example, The African Heritage Culture Forum is a volunteer-led organisation that works to celebrate African heritage and support Black History Month activities across the city.

Black History Month gives us a chance to listen, learn, and celebrate these stories but also to recognise that community spirit, volunteering, and the contributions of Black communities continue throughout the year.

This month, we’re proud to celebrate the people, communities, and volunteers who help make Sheffield the diverse and welcoming city it is today.
