Changing Faces

Changing Faces is the UK’s leading charity tackling the psychological and social challenge of living with a disfigurement. We provide direct help, advocate for improved access to health services, education and employment, and raise public awareness. The charity was founded in 1992 and is now embarking on an ambitious programme to establish regional centres. The centre for Yorkshire & the Humber, based in The Circle, is the first to be launched.

We provide support and information, and we campaign for a better world for Sheffield people – children, young persons and adults – with autism and Asperger syndrome. If you are the parent or carer of someone with autism, or if you have been diagnosed with autism yourself, you are not alone. There are around 700,000 people with autism in the UK – that’s about 11 in every 1000. Sheffield has a population of about 575,000, so it is likely that there are at least 6,000 people with autism in Sheffield.

The Society is inclusive and aims to support any individual, of any age, who may be on the autistic spectrum. We are a friendly group who are passionate about getting the best support and services in place to help and assist individuals of all ages who are affected by autism.

Short Term Education Programme (STEP)

The Short Term Educational Programme (STEP) is a city wide service offering a variety of psycho-educational courses to people who want to learn new ways of looking after their emotional wellbeing and mental health.   The service is part of Sheffield Health and Social Care Foundation Trust (SHSC). The service is preventative and recovery focused offering courses to adults in Sheffield who experience mental health issues.

STEP’s courses cover a wide range of topics around education and self management of anxiety, depression, stress and distress, overwhelming emotions, bipolar disorder, personality disorder, relaxation, recovery and well-being. These are facilitated by an experienced and well trained team in collaboration with experts by experience and volunteers which continues to bring a ‘real’ dimension to the engagement of people.

STEP staff work to and promote the Trust values and are committed to sustaining a person-centred approach in working with service users, carers and staff members.  STEP staff members show a compassionate, consistent and transparent approach to the management of mental health and emotional well-being and empowering service users and one another. The service helps to build resilience and supports individuals to develop positive coping strategies to enable them to manage their mental health and to prevent the need for longer term support.

The courses we currently facilitate are:

  • Anxiety Management
  • Depression Management
  • Bi-polar Management
  • Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder
  • Recovery Education Programme
  • Transitions Group, for 16 to 25 year olds

Referrals can be made to the service via workers in SHSC, GP’s and IAPT. If you have any queries about the service then please contact us on tel: 0114 2262660 and ask to speak to a manager.
